PingMaster
Know Your Ping
PingMaster measures cricket bat performance.
Every cricket bat is different, regardless of the brand, model, weight or price.
PingMaster gives you the information you need to choose the best bat for you and your budget.
PingMaster's Purpose
THE problem
The price of cricket bats are highly influenced by aesthetics. Bats with many straight grains, consistent coloring, with no blemishes or knots are valued more highly than bats with fewer, wavy grains, inconsistent coloring and other imperfections.
However, a good looking and expensive bat doesn’t guarantee it hits a ball better than a less expensive, less beautiful bat. Bat performance is what ultimately matters.
Current methods of estimating bat performance, such as bouncing a ball on the bat or hitting the bat with a wooden mallet are highly problematic to compare bats.
THE Solution
PingMaster tests each cricket bat for its performance.
The rebound of a ball from a bat is called “ping”. The higher the ping, the better the bat.
PingMaster measures bat ping at four locations along the bat face and provides this information to customers to help them choose a bat that is right for them and their budget.
Why PingMaster?
Our system
PingMaster was born from a common experience that most cricketers have had.
Buying a bat from a store or online comes with the hopes and expectations that it will help the player score more runs. But, after the bat is knocked in and played with in the nets or in a game, the reality sets in that this bat is not worth the money that was paid for it, despite how good it looked in the shops or on the website.
There must be a better way.
PingMaster is a standardised bat testing system that measures each bat in exactly the same way at the same location so that bats can be compared on their relative performance. No “judgment” necessary. No “feelings” required. No “sound” comparison. Just Ping. Only Ping. Know Your Ping.
Who Should Use PingMaster?
Our customers
PingMaster can be used on new bats and used bats. Amateur cricketers, parents of junior players, professional and elite players, bat retailers (both physical and online stores) and bat manufacturers can all benefit from using PingMaster.
How to Use PingMaster
Our Method
PingMaster tests each bat at 4 locations along the bat face using a standardized, repeatable method that is the same for each bat.
The ping score at each location is recorded on a unique label, which is then stuck to the bat. The serial number on the label is your guarantee of authenticity that the bat has been tested by an authorized PingMaster agent.
The “Max Ping” score is where the highest ping is located and indicates the magnitude of the “sweet spot” or “middle” of the bat. Note that it is not the area size of the sweet spot.
The “Total Ping” score is the sum of the four ping scores and gives an indication of the performance of the entire bat.
Players can choose to look for bats that have high total ping scores, high max ping scores, or high ping scores at individual locations of the bat that best suit their style of play. For example, near the toe (for drive shots) or near the splice (for pull shots).
The ping scores on a label can be represented as a graph of ping along the bat as shown.

FAQS
That is a trade secret. Authorised PingMaster agents are bound by strict confidentiality agreements and contracts that prevent disclosure of the equipment and processes that determine bat ping. Authorised agents are subject to penalty payments for any breaches of confidentiality.
Technically, no. But, realistically, we would not expect any individual ping value to reach a value of 400 or more, unless bat manufacturers are able to do something magical with bat production. But who knows, maybe PingMaster will need to adjust this maximum value expectation over time.
Technically, yes.
Good question. We have measured ping along more points across the bat face, but have found that these extra points don’t significantly add any more valuable information. It takes longer to measure more locations, and we have come to the conclusion that 4 measurements is about the right balance to know what needs to be known.
Yes – absolutely. Testing used bats is highly recommended. If you have an old bat that you like (or don’t like), we recommend that you get this bat tested by an Authorised PingMaster testing agent. You can find these agents here. Knowing the ping of your existing bat will help you with your next bat purchase. If you like your current bat, when it comes time to buy a new bat, you can decide to choose a bat that has a similar, or better, ping rating. Alternatively, if you don’t like your current bat, you should know what this ping rating is, so that you can look for a better ping rating for your next bat.
No. You can’t tell that the bat has been tested by PingMaster, except that it will have our special, anti-counterfeit label placed on the bat after testing.
Fantastic question. We believe it does, but because PingMaster is so new, we can’t prove this yet. It is a source of research and development that we are pursuing. We plan to test new bats, bats after they have been knocked in and bats that have been used for 1, 2 and 3 seasons to find out how bat ping changes over the life of a bat. Stay tuned to our website to keep up to date with what we find out.
